You have to be careful about your hair choices. They can alter your whole appearance for better or worse. Even when you are only on conference calls all day, your hair is still something that the people you speak with can easily see.
Usually, the only way out of a bad hair decision is to charge it to experience and hope to have better results next time. But gone are the days when the only way you would know if a haircut or color looked good on you was by trying it yourself. Thanks to modern technology, you can jump between various styles and shades without even having to step out of your home (or actually touching your hair).
Many apps on the market can help you visualize which hair colors look best for your face shape, skin tone, and even preferences. Find the best of them here.
Five Best Apps to Test Hairstyles
Searching for the best hairstyling app can be quite the struggle when you are going in blind. An SEO consultant can make some of the best apps more visible on search engines, but there are times when you want to dig a little deeper.
Here are some of the best ones that we have found. Most of them are free, too.
1. Hair Color Dye
Price: Free (with in-app purchases)
Available on: iOS
If you are primarily concerned with finding a hair color that goes well with your skin tone, Hair Color Dye is a versatile tool that we recommend. The great thing about this app is that it allows you to color all or only certain parts of your hair. It has a tool that lets you manually shade areas, so you can go from virtually giving yourself a full-color change or trying out streaks and highlights.
Among its limitations, however, are that some colors are unavailable until you pay to get them in your library. It is also only up for download in the Apple app store.
2. Modiface Hair Color
Price: Free (with in-app purchases)
Available on: iOS, Android
The Modiface Hair Color app is another tool that lets you manipulate your hair color. While it does not allow you to change your hairstyle through the app, it does let you either upload a photo or try different colors in real time. That is, it detects your hair and lets you try various colors and see how they look with movement.
The app has a premium version that lets you unlock more hair colors for a price. It can also only do full color, so you can’t try highlights on the app.
3. Hairstyles for Your Face Shape
Price: Free (with in-app purchases)
Available on: iOS, Android
The shape of your face largely determines if a hairstyle looks good on you or not. This app determines your face shape through a picture you upload. Once it figures that out, the app then suggests hairstyles that you can try to see if they look good on you.
While the app is free, there are hairstyle packs for face shapes that you can only unlock by purchasing them.
4. Perfect365: One-Tap Makeover
Price: Free (with in-app purchases)
Available on: iOS, Android
Perfect365 is not so much a hairstyling app as it is a makeover app. It allows users to try on different hairstyles and colors, along with various makeup options and face detection that allows for better touch-up effects. It also lets you share your edited photos on your social media accounts.
The app has an optional paid subscription plan that adds features and decreases in-app ads. It also has a pro version for professional makeup artists to try certain looks before client meetups.
5. Black Hair for Women
Price: Free (with in-app purchases)
Available on: iOS
Some apps have various styles available to try, but not all cater specifically to black women’s hairstyling needs. Similar to other apps, it lets you upload a photo and try different hairstyles and colors. The app is extra customizable, too, as it lets you adjust the saturation and brightness of the styles you are trying.
One setback is that it is currently unavailable for Android. You also need to pay to unlock certain hairstyles and to remove ads completely.
While these are some of the best apps we have found, it also helps to know that some filters on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat offer similar features that you can access in-app. Still, hairstyling apps usually offer a wider range of cuts, styles, and colors, along with a more easily navigable interface.
